On Friday, March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck 43 miles off Japan's northeast coast, rattling the country and sending tsunami waves up to 125 feet tall crashing into coastline communities. With nearly 15,000 confirmed deaths, more than 5,000 injuries, some 10,000 people missing, more than 125,000 buildings damaged or destroyed, and numerous resulting nuclear accidents, the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami was one of the most devastating natural disasters ever recorded.
